It’s Earth Day and we are so fortunate to have so many beautiful spaces here to take in nature and celebrate Mother Earth! Here are five spots we love for enjoying the outdoors.
The Eno River
Stretching from Durham County to Orange County, the Eno River offers plenty of great views, trails, and hidden swimming spots. You can find the swinging bridge, head to West Point on the Eno, or head to their site to find the perfect loop to hike.
The Sarah P. Duke Gardens
While they are in the process of reopening to the public, Sarah P. Duke Gardens is one spot that deservedly makes many Best of Durham lists. Enjoy a leisurely stroll or take advantage of a tour of these breathtaking grounds.
Duke Forest offers 7,000 acres of beauty and you’ll find plenty of great spots for hiking and connecting with nature. You’ll also love the opportunities to connect with wildlife – there are some fantastic spots for bird watching!
Museum of Life and Science
The Museum of Life and Science is the perfect spot for enjoying the outdoors and having fun with kids. They have great outdoor trails and play areas that are just as fun for adults as they are for the littles!
Duke Lemur Center
While the Duke Lemur Center is also currently closed, it was impossible to keep off this list! The center, which offers tours when open, houses several different kinds of lemurs and is a leader in conservation and research. (Lemurs are one of the most endangered species in the world!) The center is a fun experience for all ages and while we can’t visit right now, you can still support their efforts and see all the cuteness over on their Instagram.
