Bull City & Beyond: Your Durham & Triangle Weekend Guide for September 25 – 27, 2026

This is the first full weekend of fall, and it’s actually starting to feel like it, cooler mornings, a little more bite in the evening air. It’s also a packed one: two very different Friday night options, then a Saturday that runs from a Scottish festival to a Shrek-themed block party to modern dance under the stars. Here’s where to start.

For Garden’s Sake

For Garden’s Sake keeps its weekly Friday series going with Josh Branch on live music and the ThaBirdMan food truck on site, a relaxed, early-autumn evening among the plants. It’s free, and the series runs most Fridays through mid-October if this particular week doesn’t line up with your schedule.

Dolly Day
Friday, 5:45–9 PM
American Tobacco Campus

American Tobacco Campus throws a Dolly Parton-themed celebration under the water tower, with Heather Rogers and Meltdown Rodeo trading sets of covers between rounds of Dolly trivia and games. Wear your best Dolly-inspired look for a shot at prizes, and proceeds, matched by ATC, benefit Dolly’s Imagination Library. It’s free and open to all ages.

Pumpkin Patch Express
Saturday & Sunday
Entry times 9:30 AM–3:30 PM
Museum of Life and Science

The Museum of Life and Science opens its fall favorite for the season’s opening weekend: a ride on the Ellerbe Creek Railway out to the pumpkin patch, where every ticketed guest picks and decorates a pumpkin to take home. Back at the station, there’s a hay maze scavenger hunt, duck races, mini pumpkin putt-putt, and fresh popcorn. The ride keeps running most weekends through its final weekend, October 24 and 25.

Outlandish Hillsborough Scottish Festival
Saturday, 10 AM–4 PM
Ayr Mount

Ayr Mount leans into its Outlander connection for this Scottish festival, with bagpipes, traditional dancing, broadsword lessons, and a whiskey tasting alongside a Craigh na Dun fairy dancer performance. A dedicated Wee Bairns area keeps younger visitors busy with colonial games and heritage crafts. Kids get in free.

Folk-art-style illustration of jovial green storybook ogres celebrating an Oktoberfest-inspired street festival with steins, pretzels, onions, and Bavarian decorations.

Shrektoberfest
Saturday, Noon–6 PM
DSSOLVR

This is Durham at its most wonderfully ridiculous: a Shrek-themed block party with a curated art market of fairy-tale-inspired crafts, food trucks, and a full slate of competitions, an onion-eating contest, a costume contest for the best fairy-tale look, and a stein-holding competition. DJs keep it going into the evening, with a Shrek-themed cocktail menu for the adults in the group.

Contemporary dancers performing under vivid red, orange, purple, and blue stage lighting, with the American Dance Festival Made in NC logo.

American Dance Festival: Made in NC
Saturday, 7:30–9 PM
Downtown Cary Park

American Dance Festival closes out the Saturday lineup with a free encore of Made in NC, four world-premiere works from North Carolina choreographers Tracey Durbin, Jabu Graybeal, Courtney Liu, and Amanda K. Miller. Bring a blanket, grab a spot on the Great Lawn, and settle in for an evening of modern dance under the stars.

Plan Your Weekend

Wherever you land this weekend, from a pumpkin patch train ride to a Shrek-themed block party, the first real cool snap of fall makes it an easy one to spend outside. We hope you get out and enjoy it.
